    He strove to uplift her from serfdom and thrall.
    As he fought neath the flag of Sinn Fein.
    III
    No nation could render a soldier so brave, he knew not the shadow of gloom. He dreaded not pitch [?] nor scaffold or grave,
    But shuddered his life in its bloom.
