    English to learn its spelling and the same of Irish. Next day he asked it of them. They learned it as best they could.
    The food those pupils had for dinner usually was oaten cakes and often potatoes.
    There was another Hedge-School in Coolcun. A man named J. Ryan taught in his own house. I heard he was a great Teacher both in Irish and English. A lot of people from other villages went to school to him. His home was a small thatched cottage.
    The scholars who went to those Hedge-Schools paid the Teachers themselves. Two shillings and sixpence was the fee charged by those people
