  1. One night Denis Whelan was driving Fr. Hayes to a sick call & they had not gone far when the priest took the whip from Denis & began to lash at the other side of the car. He never spoke the whole way till they went to the house. When they were coming home the priest asked him did he know what he was doing. He said he was keeping the devil from killing the horse. When they went home the priest burned the whip and prayed for a long time over the house.
