it is probable this old castle also formed one of the De Lacy strongholds.
Some couple of hundred yards from the castle between the castle and the old Church is a very large moat. It consists of a circular raised heap of earth about twenty feet high. Some very old trees beech and white-thorn are growing on the top of this moat. Traces of a ditch are to be seen which apparently once encircled this moat, hollows in the ground and clumps of earth overgrown with grass, and moss, are convenient to the moat. A stately farmhouse is beside the castle - inhabited by a family called O'Connell. This residence is an old style farm house, three storey building and an attic. Some of the windows are very small especially the upper storey. Some blind windows are also on this house, ie windows which formerly (?) of glass panes, were closed up with stone. It is said locally that this is an example of a house which was once taxed according to the number of windows. In order to avoid the tax the windows were built up with stones instead of glass. One of the rooms in this house is always closed up. It is said a "ghost" is in this particular room.
