    Castle Fogarty north of Thurles was...

    Castle Fogarty north of Thurles was burned down during the "Black and Tan" war. All the roof was burned off but it is now rebuilt and thre are people living in it by the name of Carew. During the Black and Tan war Mick Smith and two comrades were returning from an ambush in Rosmore. They were walking along the road when they heard a lorry coming after them. They took to the fields, too of them went a couple of fields. Mick Small lay down in a drain. Two other men came on bicycle and went over the ditch but left the bicycles outside. When the lorry came they saw the bikes and thought they were going to be ambushed. They searched the field and did not find Mick. When they were going away he stood up and fired at them. He shot six but lost his own life. His two comrades heard the shooting and went up on top of a hill and ambushed then. One of them got shot in the finger. Then they ran and their
