    They were paid a penny a week for the instruction they gave. The subjects that was taught in the hedge schools was Irish Arithmetic and sometimes English. Irish was spoken by the master and pupils and it was used in teaching also. It was Irish books and sum books they used. John Barry was a poet and he wrote Irish. He worked on the farm every day and on Sundays he also taught the pupils or made poems. He was born in Lower Woodstock and lived there always. When he died he gave all his Irish to his son David who was then living in Upper Woodstock. There was another hedge school in Ballinoe and he went there when he was young. The teachers lodged in the houses and got their food
