  1. During the time of the Penal Laws the Catholics were not allowed to go to school in the open. They had to be held in secret. The pupils built schools in the side of a ditch and they were taught in these schools. Those schools were called hedge schools or poor scholar schools. One of those schools were situated in Woodstock and the man who taught it was James Keegan's great great grandfather whose name was David Barry. There was another hedge school in Ballintubber on the Sheehan's rock and the man who taught it was Crowley. Schools were carried on in the farm houses and the people who taught in these houses were teaching music also.
