Another lodger who was a Protestant carpenter employed at the Church whispered to O Mahony that he knew him was aware of what he wanted to do and that he would help him to escape. A young man of the family was what is known a "hard case".
The carpenter requested this young man to help in the escape of the Young Irelander. Accordingly, when the police called to make inquiries about strange lodgers young Leary told them that there was nobody in the house except the family and the Protestant. Then he got in touch with the skipper of one of the strange fishing boats. The skipper agreed to take away the man who was on the run. Leary and O Mahony dressed as fishermen left the house before daybreak went aboard the boat. Leary returned home as soon as the boat was ready to sail. In this way O Mahony got out of the country.
