- Food In Olden TimesLong ago the people lived on potatoes oaten bread and occasionally potato cakes and "Boxty". Sowans is another food that was eaten long ago This the way that it was made. Brushed oats were steeped in water over night, and next morning, the water was drained off and the remainder was put down on the fire and boiled. Then it was eaten at night with butter. Oaten meal bread was very often used. The way it was made was the oaten meal and salt were mixed together, and rolled out flat and put on a grid iorn beside the fire until it was baked hard. Sometimes meat was used when a party would be given. Fish was another food that was eaten pretty often. Wooden basins and wooden egg stands were used.
