- Spinning
Long ago in every house in this locality spinning-wheels were to be seen. The women and girls employed themselves by spinning their own linen and wool. Flax was grown to make the linen. It was the same as corn. When it was ripe enough it was pulled and bound into sheaves and tied.It was not cut as corn is. Afterwards it was put into stucks or stacks. After some time in that condition it was brought to the bog and buried in a drain with bog stuff covering it.About a week or so after, it was taken up washed and dried. Then it was "scutched" and the women then wove it with their spinning-wheels. In each district there was a place where people met on certain days and "scutched" the flax. This was known as a "scutching party".In Parkaree there was a cement stone by Egan's well where the "scutching" process took place. The remains of the house were removed only a few years ago.(continues on next page)- Collector
