The cows in this district are tied with a chain around the neck. In olden times the people used to go around the fields taking the milk from the cows. The old people used to tie two sticks in the shape of a cross. It was believed to keep away witchcraft.
Milk taking was very common long ago. I heard the following story about milk taking. One Summer's morning a man from the district was bringing in the cow's out of the field. He saw a white hare sucking one of the cows. He went in and called out his son Seán with the grey-hound. As soon as the dog saw the hare, the hair stood straight on his back, and he made after her.
