    The local estate was that of Clonyn, owned by the Nugents.

    Greville was said to have thrown his elder brother down the stairs, the night of their father's funeral, and killed him.
    It was also said locally, when the castle was being built that Greville Nugent thought there was silver in the district and that he dug the foundations deeper than he might hoping to come on the silver.
    Many of the houses in Delvin village, owned by this family were knocked down as he did not wish the smoke of their chimneys to be seen from the castle. These houses were on the higher ground at the south end of the village. The people evicted emigrated to America.
    There are no great clearances remembered by the people.
    Rosmead House, Delvin, was also owned by this family, but was looked on as a different estate. Some of the houses in the village are still owned by the Rosmead landlord who is called Michael de la Bèdoyère. His grandmother, the Marchioness de la Bèdoyère
