  1. In the year 1839 a severe storm swept over Ireland. No man in the district remembers it, and it was known locally as the night of the "Big Wind". Little is known about it save there were many houses unroofed. No difficult matter, as the little cabins of that time were very insecure.
Three Italian sailors, two named Uenelli, and another whose name is forgotten, were drowned in the River Maigue in the year 1849, while coming ashore to attend Mass at the old church known as the White Forge, in the townsland of Curaheen. They are buried in Mellon churchyhard. Their names may be seein on a tombstone erected by their father who was on board and was probably the owner of the ship. Their names were Francisco and Angelo Uenalli.
The S.S. Trenaglas was wrecked on the Bridge Rock off Ringmoylan. Her cargo of maize was destroyed; it was sold to the farmers of the district at a cheap rate, and the ship was broken up.
