Ar an leathanach seo

  1. There are not many castles in my district, but there are many in my parish. Shanpallas castle is situated on a ledge of rock on three sides of which is swampy land and when this castle was occupied it would have been almost surrounded by a morass, so it could be attacked only from one side.
    It was a fine castle of the Anglo Norman type, a lofty keep stood on the western side of the outer wall which is still perfect. It is said to have been blown up with gunpowder in the year 1648 by Sir Hardress Waller later of Castletown.
    The eastern wall of the Courtyard is in a state of preservation. The battlements being still standing. A round tower with a circular star is still to be seen on the north. The stair is supposed to lead to an underground passage so they could get water in time of a siege. It is said to have been built by O'Donovan in time of the Anglo Norman, and afterwards passed into the hands of the Geraldines.
    The castle of Ballyculhane situated on what was then the bank of the River Maigue was surrounded by a moat, traces of which may still be
