Their ball was made sometimes of gutte-perca, or of woven horse-hair, sewn either with wire or a strong hemp cord waxed. The hurleys used in past times were much stronger and heavier than those used now-a-days. Very often they were made from the natural growth of a young ash. Sometimes it was a furze root with a natural bend.
The players in those days could not find money to pay carpenters to "dress" their hurleys.
