   when the result was announced from Courthouse where the count took place the figures showed the Liberals were defeated by 44 votes. Bribery was the cause of this as many of the Liberal votes were bought. A large crowd accompanied by Revd. Canon and Father James O’Keeffe C.C. & Coveney Chaplain in Convent assembled at Courthouse. A large body of police were on duty armed with rifles. The canon on hearing the result addressed those present and said
   “Boys we are defeated numbers of our own people who voted against us. It is a case of bribery”
   A free fight ensued amongst the crowd. Rival parties attacking each other with black-thorn sticks. The soldiers were called and Cronin a magistrate threatened to read the Riot Act. The police present used their rifles as batons. Colonel Twentyman was unseated from his horse. Nothing daunted he ordered his men to rush the courthouse steps and to dislodge those on them.
   They made many attempts to do so but eventually succeeded.
   The Liberal supporters later proceeded to wreck the houses of those whom were suspected of taking bribe money. In all about twelve houses were sacked by them.
   The following day a woman from Watergate St., fearing her home may be wrecked went to the
