  1. In the year 1798, there lived near Youghal, a man named Pádraigín Gabha. At that time the United Irishmen were 700 strong in Youghal.
Pádraigín used be making pikes for them, and he knew all their plans.
The English soldiers and Yeomen were watching closely for knowledge of the doings of the United Irishmen. One day they arrested Pádraigín and questioned him closely, but not a word would he tell about them. Then they beat him cruelly, but still no good. There was a crowd of people looking on, but they were too much afraid of the Yeomen to attempt to save Pádraigín.
Suddenly who should run in through the crowd but Pádraigín's wife. She pushed the people out of her way until she reached her husband's side. Everybody thought she would advise him to tell everything about the United Irishmen, but they were mistaken. She stood firmly, and in a strong courageous voice called out "Don't yield! Don't yield!" He did not yield and suffered the scourging bravely until his end came. His name and fame live to this day.
