  1. In the Penal times Borlinn was a lonely isolated glen. It had its mass rock and hedge school. There were no Protestants living in Borlinn long ago because there was not enough of good land there. Later in Penal times the people went to mass to Gougane. They had a mountain path going across the hill called Poll. The passage is a fissure between two rocks. It is eighteen hundred feet above sea level, and it is very dangerous. There was a woman killed there once. The top of the path is almost perpendicular. In modern times the young people of Borlinn go there on the feast of St Fenbar and it is great fun for they go in gangs.
    Last year the government undertook to plant Valley Desmond with forest trees and the whole area is wired half way up the ascent, for fear that sheep or cattle would interfere with the young trees. The man who had contract being a stranger knew nothing
