The Christmas candles are kept burning all night, and no door is locked or barred. Slips of seasonal flowers white-thorn, and furze, cherry and apple blossoms, are plucked before sunrise on May morning and brought into the house to usher in the summer. Bonfires are lit in the fields on St. John's Eve, and the farm stock are supposed to receive a blessing if the fire is brought amongst them. The kitchen chairs and table are cleared off lest the Holy Souls should want to sit at table during the night.
