Énri Mac Fiacraċ. - Before the national schools were established there were hedge schools. Hedge schools were little schools or sort of houses built at the back of a hedge. In those days there were but few teachers to be found, and whenever the people heard of a good scholar they went and kidnapped him and brought him to a hedge in the townland. There all the people gathered and built him a little house, and there the school was held also.
The teachers in those days were not paid by the Government, but the pupils brought him a shilling every week, and their fathers brought him potatoes and turf, and he was treated with great respect.
Quite near to my house in the village of Raheela there was an old hedge school to which my grandfather went, and the teacher's name was Mr. John Cunningham. The school was held(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
