   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   In every district in Ireland at one time there were poets and bards, and they handed on from generation to generation the glories of the nation and her woes and wrongs which were many. In every district there was the local poet. In the district of Mountrath we had several. One of the best was John J Keegan of Gurt-na-Clay and known in history as the field of the Stakes. He wrote some good poetry, and songs, some of his principal songs are "The Rolling Nore," "the Holly and Ivy Girl", "The Blind girl at the holy well" and "Keegan's farewell to the Nore." The Upper woods poet was John Ryan; his songs are unwritten but are known locally by the peasantry. He could compose verses
