Ar an leathanach seo
- Not far from the old castle in the townsland of Ballykealy, which is situated about a quarter of a mile from my residence, the remains of an old hedge school is to be seen. It was situated in Gorman's field, owned by Mr James Walshe now. In the Penal times, this school was erected by the people of the neighbourhood, for the purpose of educating their children.
The teacher who first taught there, was Mr Walshe. He was a grandfather of the present Mr James Walshe, who owns the field, Mr Gorman also taught there, and it is his name the field bears.
The people were then so oppressed that they were not allowed to teach but in spite of all opposition, they managed to invent some means of getting education for their children;-
The children often congregated at the back of a private hedge, and here without any shelter from the heavens, they were taught.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
