  1. A football match was played in Knocktopher between Stoneyford and Ballyhale about 1878. There were forty players on each side and the game was called 'Rough and Tumble'.
Ballyhale won the match. They had no goal posts and to win one team had to bring home the ball in spite of the other team. The Ballyhale men brought home the ball. These players did not wear jerseys or togs. They took off their coats and waistcoats so that they could run better.
Some of the players were Paddy Kelly, Martin O'Neill, Jack Lyons and Jack Welsh. The had two covers on the ball so that it would not burst.
Hurling was played locally long ago. They used big heavy hurleys with very wide boshes. They played with a big heavy ball. Dick Grace and Jack Power were famous hurlers.
Handball was also played and sports were also common. Running and jumping and weight throwing were the chief things done at these sports.
