  1. A very long time ago there were two people going around the district. Their names were Martin and Nellie. Nellie was blind, and Martin used to have to lead her along.
    One night the two of them were sleeping in a barn, after getting a heavy wetting the day before. During the night Nellie became deaf. On the following day the two of them were going along the road. Martin did not know that she was deaf. When he was going into a house he told Nellie to stand on the road until he came back. Of course Nellie was deaf and she did not hear him, so she kept on walking.
    When Martin came out of the house, to his surprise, he found that Nellie was gone. He became very much excited, and started to run here and there, but no sign of Nellie could he see. After a while he met a little boy, and he asked him did he see an old woman passing the way. "An old woman" said the boy in surprise. "Yes" said Martin. "O!" said the boy I'm running for the police-men to arrest an
