- It is customary for country people - principally the farming community to have purely local names on particular fields, hollows, hills, streams, woods, etc.
The names were originally given in most cases to describe some natural physical characteristic.
The Road field was the field lying along the road. The Furry field had a plentiful supply of furze. The Coolawn was the back field or the field at the back end of the farm. The Mullagh was the field at the top of the hill.
Ballinfuil - the townland of the blood or slaughter.
The Paddock - the closed field - a field so well fenced in that stock in it would be considered quite safe.
The Barley field - the field where barley was usually grown in former times.
Mona Rua - the red bog - although it may be now reclaimed and tilled.
The Lone Bush, a bush standing in a treeless or shrubless place.
The Two-Mile Bush, a bush on the main road two mils from an important town.
