from sheer hunger and from the various diseases that follow hunger.
Th survivors - more dead than alive - found themselves confronted with the terrible problem of how to dispose of the dead bodies which were everywhere, in the hovels, by the roadside and in the fields.
Providing coffins was out of the question. Where people died a distance from the graveyard they were buried - some where they died and others in a common pit in the neighbourhood. Some were carried in sheets to the graveyard but so weak had the people grown that this had to be done in relays. One part carried the corpse a distance which they thought was a fair share of the way fr them and left it near a neighbours house, who had perforce to have it forwarded another stage on the journey, until finally it got an unceremonious burial. This state of affairs continued until the relief meal was brought to the district. This was yellow or Indian meal which was doled out in each parish, and was the only food the people used for a considerable time.
