Then the rolls were spun and the yarn, as the spun wool was called - was ready to be used either for knitting various articles of wear such as stockings, socks, gloves, jersies etc. or it was sent to the local weaver to be woven in his hand loom into flannels, friezes or blankets. In this way the country people provided a very great part of their clothing entirely by their own home labour and with very little cost. The wearing apparel thus produced was very durable and more comfortable to wear than the perhaps showy stuff made in the factory either at home or abroad. The more industrious not only procured their own requirements, but made stuff for sale in the way of socks, stockings and rolls of flannel cloth for underwear; frieze for coat material and for overcoats. These were taken to market in the local town just as butter, poultry and eggs were and were exposed for sale by the farmers' wives. In this way the womenfolk contributed a considerate portion of the family income and incidentally helped to provide dowries for the marriageable daughter
