  1. Buying and Selling
In olden times county shops were very common in country districts, and the rural inhabitants made almost all their purchases in these shops. The people for miles around here seldom went into the nearest town of Aughnacloy to make purchases of any small commodity such as tea, sugar etc, only perhaps on two Wednesdays per month, which was the market day in this town; and then it was almost imperative for them to do so.
As the monthly fair was held on the first Wednesday of each month, they generally went there to dispose of their live-stock; and on the other or intervening Wednesdays they went to dispose of their eggs and butter, or fowl and other small articles. These farmers who disposed of their 'Bonhams' in this way, also gave 'trust' or 'credit' if they could afford it, when retailing their young pigs in the towns. But they did not give it to everybody; only perhaps their neighbour came to the town and wanted a pig or two, and had not all the money. Then when they saw how Felix or Barney had a pair of pigs, for which they could not get a fair price, they came around to see them. Then Felix's wife or Barney's daughter advised Pat's wife to make Pat take the pigs for themselves, as they had a good crop of potatoes and plenty of milk. That was alright, but poor Pat had only so much money.
