They were taken back and made carry the wounded men into the nearest house, and then lodged in jail to await trial.

The trial came on. The judge ordered John to take the oath. John lifted the book several times but put it down again. The judge asked for his information. He was told he gave none. "You have saved a pair of rascals from five years in jail" said the judge.
