- Thatching
In olden times nearly all the houses were thatched except those who had plenty of money and a good way of living. Money was very hard to get and is to the present day.
There is one house that I know in my district that is thatched. The man who owns it thatches it every summer with wheat straw. He waits until there comes a nice dry day and then he takes a ladder and a sheaf of wheat straw and goes upon the roof of the house. He binds it down tightly and then he takes another sheaf and goes out a little bit over what he has done. He keeps doing that until he has it finished. Then he puts an iron peg at each end of the wall and puts wire along the bottom of the roof and ties it down to the pegs He puts two rows of wire along the top of the roof Then if there comes any wind it will not blow off the thatch.
