There was a man there long ago and he was very fond of being out late by night.

There was a man there long ago and he was very fond of being out late by night. One night he was coming home at two o'clock. When he was coming up near a fort he heard the fairies playing bagpipes. The man was step-dancing as they played. The night after he heard the same thing at the same hour. The third night he had bagpipes himself and the fairies gave him gold. A couple of nights after he was going up the road and he heard a man mowing inside the ditch. He went in and started spreading the hay after the scythe. The second night he saw the man again at the same hour. The third night he brought a pike himself and the man gave him three lumps of gold the size of a big pot. The man also gave him the hay. From that year on he had great luck with his cattle and sold a lot of hay every year. He lived to be the age of 96 years.
