  1. In the days of the highwaymen a famous robber chief named Captain Gallagher had his headquarters in a cave beneath Carraig Ard in among the Ox Mountains. He is said to have been kindhearted and just in many ways. He robbed the landlords and the rich and divided the spoil on the poor and distressed. If a poor person of the district needed money he went to Captain Gallagher who immediately gave him what he wanted so that he was loved by the poor people. The Government offered a reward of £100 to anyone who would give information for the arrest of the Captain. Many tales are told of his exploits. In those days there were no police, but the Revenue men did the same
