  1. In our district there are many remarkable hills. One of which I know best is Scriob na Muice, the great steep hill to the right side of the road behind Henrys. Long ago the Ox Mountains were the haunt of all kinds of wild animals. One day, it is told, Finn Mac Cool and his men were hunting the wild boar among these mountains. As they were crossing over Meenamada near Rochford's house on the far shore of Lough Easkey, a great boar rose before them. He tried to attack Finn who chased him over hill and valley as far as Scriob na Muice. The boar tried three times to scramble up the steep face of the mountain but three times he fell down, tearing the earth savagely as he did so. This is said to account for the great furrow which line the hill from
