- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)was very little artificial lighting in country districts except what the people made from green rushes. The rushes were pulled. The green ring was peeled off until a small quantity of it is left to keep the core firm.When peeled the rushes were then dried and afterwards dipped in oil which was generally melted butter which was plentiful. The candle was then ready to light. This candle was held upright with a wooded candle stick which was also home made.Basket making
Basket making was also carried on in our districts. Sally rods were cut tied in bundles in a pot of water. They were than removed and the skin was pulled off.In every district there was a basket maker who visited any house where the people required baskets.
