  1. Long ago the old people used to have a lot of prayers. Some when entering into church or to school.
This one used to be said when starting to school.
It is my duty to go to school.
There I must learn to read and write,
There I must learn more about God and my religion.
I must try to learn these and other things when I am young.
This is one said when going to bed,
I lay my body down to sleep,
I pray to God my soul to keep.
And if I die before I wake I pray
to God my soul to take.
This prayer is still said by old people,
    when raking the fire.
Coiglighim an teine seo mar coiglighis Críost Chách.
Brighidh in a bun agus Máire in a lár.
An dha aspal déag tá i gchatair na nGrás.
Chumdhac an tighe seo is ar ndaoine go brádhach.
This is said when going to bed.
O my God I know I must die
I do not know when, or where, nor how.
But if I die in mortal sin Ill be lost for
