- 1. Houses long ago were not like the houses nowadays. There were thatched roofs on them. Bog fir timber that was in the roofs. There were small windows in them with three bars of iron across in each window to save themselves from robbers. The doors were small with two bars of iron in the side the door was hung. When night would come they would draw these to bars of iron across. Long ago they had the cattle tied inside in the house. They had the hens also in the house. The hens and the pigs were under the kitchen bed, and a sow and bonhams at the fire. At night when all the people were in bed the hens came out and perched around(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
