  1. One morning early for recreation
Down by a river I chanced to rove
Where I espied a maid in conversation
Just convenient to a Shade Grove
I was struck with wonder, I stood and pondered
I could stand no longer, 'til; I stepped oer
And the song she sang made the valleys ring
It was Erin's King, brave Dan's no more.
When I heard the news I was much confused
I myself excused and I thus did say
    OConnell gone, Old Erin's son
The brightest bard that e'er stood the day.
To relate his Glory he was famed in story
And Erin sorely will feel the fall
For his sweet voice we no more rejoice
And the harp is mute in Tara's Hall
In '98 he raised the state
Of this lovely island I do declare
With grief oppressed he came from the West
And he was elected in the County Clare.
