  1. Long ago something about 80 or 90 years ago there lived a rich farmer in Kilmurray. His name was Mr. Kennedy Hayes. At that time there were poor scholars going around; and they used to lodge here and there all over. So wan night wan of them came for lodging to Mr. Kennedy Hayes. The night was a very cold wan in the middle of Winter and he had a fine roaring fire down. So when the poor scholar came in Mr. Kennedy Hayes thought he'd have a "rise" out of him as those poor scholars were supposed to be very clever men entirely.
    The poor scholar came in and he was welcome for no wan would refuse them a night's shelter.
    When he came in he passed the remark:
    "You have a fine fire down, sir!"
    "Oh", said Mr. Kennedy Hayes, "I dont call that a fire."
    "Then what do ye call it?" says the scholar.
    "I call it 'Murtang'" says Mr. Kennedy Hayes.
    "Begor," says the poor scholar, I never heard
