    A piece of alder stick about six inches long and an inch in diameter, was first got. The pith was scooped out leaving a hole in the centre. A ramrod the width of the hole was then made. Two pieces of wet paper were rammed into each end of the hole, so that the air inside could not escape. Then the ram-rod was pressed against one of the papers. The
