about two hundred people. The people over seventy number about twenty. In olden times there were only a few fishermen in the village and they were situated very near the Shannon. On one occasion the bank broke opposite one of those houses which was occupied by a man, woman and child. The man and child were drowned and the woman escaped. She kept on to the timber roof and landed safely on a hill near by.
Some of the people use Irish words of which here are some; Drib, a drain. Dromar, a backstrap. Ladhróg, a drill. Nasar, a bed of straw. Ciseach, a path across a drain.
The most common names are Grimes and Hickey. The Hickeys were natives of Coonagh but the Grimes were not. They came up the Shannon one night on a turf boat.
