    with a foal or any other animal. A chicken was killed by cutting the head off, and the knife with the blood on it was put into the child's hand. This was supposed to break the charm. It was also considered unlucky to go near water at Whitsuntide for fear of drowning.
    The first three days of April are often called the "borrowed days". April borrowed three days from March "to skin the old cow." The first day put her on her knees, the second day killed her, and the third day skinned her. These things are talked about when the first days of April are very cold.
    The month of May is considered to be the severest month of the year on old people or delicate people. The old people say "March will search,
    April will try,
    But May will tell you, Whether you'll live or die."
