  1. First you get the green rushes, take off the skin and leave a strip on each. Put unsalted butter or lard into a "grissit" on the fire. Steep the rushes in it three or four times letting them dry each time. Hang them up from the ceiling to dry.
    The "grissit" is an iron vessel shaped like a boat. They had a long candle stick which they called a "sconce". It was three-and-a-half or four feet high and it stood on the floor. The candle was put sitting in this and when it was burning they had to "snuff" it now and again with an iron scissors to make it burn brighter.
