- In the olden days when people made money on wool they used to spin and card it themselves. In the long Winter nights they would go from one house to the other in the neighbourhood staying about a week in each house making thread out of the wool. After having it shorn from the sheep's back it was well washed and dried and then one or two would tease it, another would oil it with rape-oil because if it was'nt oiled it could not be spun. Then someone else would card it into little rolls with two wire cards specially made for the purpose . It was then passed on to the spinner who put it through little by little in the spinning wheel and it came out as thread which was wound up according(continues on next page)
