very small on houses long ago because in those days the windows were taxed. There were half-doors common in the district to keep out the fowl. The kind of the houses in olden times were mudwall houses. The way they built them was they dug up clay and put water on it. Then they left it to sour. After that they walked through it and they often rode horses through it to mix it. The roof was thatched with wheaten-straw or oaten-straw or rushes. The chimneys were built with stone and mortar. The floors were made of clay and mortar. The floors were made of clay and some of them flags. The people used wax candles and chips of deal to show them light. Some of the people had the fire in the middle of the floor. The old houses are much warmer than the news ones.
