  1. Oaten-meal bread was a very common food long ago. It was made in this way. Firsts two or three cups of meal were put into a basin to which some salt, and sugar were added. Then a cup of soft water was added, and all were mixed up together into a dough. Then this dough was put on a board and rolled out to a quarter of an inch thick. Next it was put on a bread-iron by the fire to baked for about an hour.
