    The bonfire is lighted on the night of the 23rd of June is said by some to be
    in honour of St. John. Others say it is a pagan custom to light a fire in the night. The fire is made of turf, rushes, whins and heather. Cheers are passed on from one bonfire to another until all the countryside is cheering. Songs are also sung around them.
