  1. On the 1st of May there are many customs. One of them is to put a row of flowers on each side of the door and all round the house to keep away the fairies. They are also put round the byre door to keep the fairies from taking the milk.
    Long ago on this day people would not let a coal be brought out of the house because it was unlucky. There are accounts of butter been taken off the milk on this day. It was very few people who could do this. Often people churned on this day and got no butter.
