   There are old superstitions which are kept, and not forgotten in this district.

   '' If you meet a red haired person on the road when you are going a journey turn back for you will have no luck. ''

   '' If you are going on a journey on a real dark night take off your coat and turn it inside out and you will find your way all right. ''

   '' If a spoon falls on the floor a woman will come in. ''

   '' If a knife falls a man will come in.''

   '' If you go under a gate and do not come back under you will never grow.''

   '' If you stoop under a low stick you will never grow anymore.''

   '' If the crook jumps a stranger will come in.''

   '' Never put your umbrella up in the house or you will never have any luck.''

   '' Never cut down a lone tree or the fairies will take possession of your home.''

   '' If a fork falls a disappointment shall come

   '' You should not let salt fall without throwing a grain over your left shoulder.''

   '' If you see two hens fighting its a sign of a stranger.''
