    spades which is the cleanest way and the best way of all. The way the potatoes are dug is a stalk at a time. The big potatoes are put in pits to themselves and the small ones in other pits. When the potatoes are to be covered there is straw put near the potatoes. Then the clay is shoveled to the side of the pits and clapped with back of a spade or a shovel until it is roof shaped.
