  1. There was an old thatched cabin in Ballybrack which was used for a school. A man named Mr Mick Ryan used to teach there in the daytime and at night he used to go to certain houses to teach adults.
    They used to write on slates and on any clean wrapping paper they got. They used to write on them with quills. Any story books or newspapers they could get did as reading books.
    The Master used to get a penny from every pupil every Monday morning.
